What You Wanted
You never loved me.
Not from the beginning, and now not even at the end.
And definitely not now that I’m falling.
I was always there for you.
You never called out.
You were never there for me.
I called out, again and again.
I bought you gifts.
You bought me a trip to the hospital.
I woke up after that time and realised.
You never needed me.
Call me foolish for leaving you behind.
You called me the other night.
Now you need me.
Now you call out.
Now we’re not near.
You need me around.
“For me!” you pleaded.
“Do it for me.”
The answerphone offers no condolence.
The note pushed under your door explains my fate.
“I won’t be here when you need me.”
There’s a final crash as my body hits the waters below.
And you’re alone.
Just like you wanted to be.
