I've only read the first book of this series so far, but it is an excellent read. The premise of it is that, one day, in a small town called Perdido Beach in California, every person age fifteen and older disappears suddenly. And that's not all. Soon after, the kids begin to develop strange powers and the animals in the area begin to mutate. It's not long before sides are chosen and a war between the kids of Perdido Beach is imminent. And to add to all this, at the beginning of each chapter there is a countdown, but to what, nobody knows. The first book of the series is entitled Gone, the second is Hunger, and the third is Lies. If you're a fantasy fan you will love this series by Michael Grant. It is very well written and always keeps you on the edge of your seat, always leaves you waiting for the next big revelation.

I read the first and have started the second

But i don't see how he's going to continue this for another 3 books without getting either ridiculous or boring

I haven't yet read the second, but the preview for it seems very intriguing. If you look at the map in the book, there's a military base that's partially in the FAYZ, which I think could be something in the future. I sure hope the series doesn't become trite and boring.
