Hypnotism...Can you be hypnotised? Does hypnotism work? Have you been hypnotised before?

I for one am a fan for hypnotism, I would want to learn how to hypnotise someone, but however it seems that I can't be hypnotised or maybe I am already hypnotised! :wacko :wacko

there's no telling if hypnotism is real as long as you've never been hypnotized before, so if it's not real, what proof is there that it isn't?

on the other hand, it's easier to prove if it's real by undergoing it.

anyone saying it's fake, please back-up your arguments properly.

Hypnosis works to a degree. But you need to believe for it to work on you.

Hypnosis works, the only question is why? I mean, my psychology textbook has a whole section on hypnotism. So far we don't really know why people can become hypnotized, but there are a few theories floating around out there. Also, it should be noted that hypnosis works in some cases and not in others, depending on what you are trying to do. It can reduce pain, improve physical ability(if this is indeed linked to the hypnosis itself or is merely a mental thing is still under debate), and make people do things. It would not, however, make them do something that is completely unlike them, and it cannot be used to draw out lost memories. It is quite possible that hypnosis is actually what creates the repressed memories.

According to one study by Theodore Barber, however, all of the phenomena associated with hypnosis can be demonstrated in people who are not hypnotized. He did a study where one group of people was hypnotized and another was not. The second group were told to focus uncritically on any suggestions the researcher gave them. All subjects were asked to perform the same tasks, such as watching imaginary TV programs, drinking imaginary water, and hearing nonexistent music, and their performance was rated using a scoring system. The people in the second group, the ones who were not hypnotized, actually scored higher than the hypnotized group. Hypnosis as we know it might just be a way to get our minds in an uncritical mode where we are more open to suggestion from otside sources.

If there are gods, but unjust, then you should not want to worship them. If there are no gods then you will be gone, but will have lived a noble life that will live on in the memories of your loved ones.

Yeah, you can't be hypnotized if you don't want to be.

Exactly as rurudo says. Hypnotism works on a self-conscious level. It's all to do with energy, whether you are accepting or declining that suggestion coming from your peer is totally up to you.

Hypnotism is basically just a state of extreme relaxation where your brain is more open to suggestions than normal. To go into a hypnotic state, however, you have to be willing to. You have to believe that it can work for it to work. It is currently impossible to hypnotize someone against their will, but it is possible that certain combinations of flashing lights could induce this effect regardless of whether the person wants to be hypnotized or not. I'm not sure if this has been researched much, but in an episode of a show called Fringe(which deals with Fringe science) this possibility was explored.

Ah, that. :noworry Movies are movies, you know. I get what you mean anyway. Nice. So you have to be relaxed as well as willing to be hypnotized, otherwise it won't work. I would just like to ask you something: Did you know that you won't tell anything that you don't want to, even if you've already been hypnotized?

Anything that you wouldn't be okay with normally, you won't do under hypnosis. I couldn't tell you to put a gun to your head and pull the trigger. what I could do, however, is tell you that you are holding a hang glider when in fact you are holding a piece of cardboard, and then tell you to jump off a cliff. You would think you were going hang gliding, but you actually just die.

About Fringe, it is a television show that, through an interesting storyline, explores a lot of possibilities that many people would think insane but actually might be possible scientifically. Even though it is a tv show, many of the things in it may turn into a reality some day.

Keep looking at one point without blinking. The effect of Hypnotism is similar. In that state of mind, a degree of awareness does exist, but you have no control of what happens around you.

Not wrong. If a hypnotist told you to go murder someone, and you would never murder someone when not hypnotized, then you wouldn't do it under hypnosis either. Studies have found that the hypnotee has to be okay with what they are asked to do on some level if they are going to actually do it under hypnosis.
